POST OFFICE BOXES

Suburban Charges A system of clarifying private box numbers at suburban post offices in Christchurch will be begun soon. Each suburban post office will have an allocation of 1000 numbers to ensure that box numbers at each office begin with a different figure. For example, ail box numbers at Papanui will begin with the figure 5; at Upper Riccarton with 6; at Sydenham with 7, and so on. To fit in with this scheme, box numbers at four suburban offices—Hornby, New Brighton, Sumner, and Woolston—will have to be changed. At present, both Sydenham and Sumner box numbers begin with the figure 7. Riccarton and New Brighton with the figure 8, and there are other such duplications. Hornby First The first change Will be made in Hornby numbers, with the opening of the new post office there in August, but other changes will not be made for six months. Boxholders are being notified of the changes and their new numbers immediately, how ever. The fee fbr a private box in a suburban post office Will remain unchanged at £2. A canvass for advertisements in the yellow-pages section of the Christchurch telephone directory will also be begun by the commercial branch of the Post Office this week. This is in preparation for a re-printing of the telephone directory early next year.
