CELLO SERIES

Mstislav Rostropovich will be the soloist in a series of nine concerts in London next month in which 31 works for cello and orchestra will be played. The composers will range from Vivaldi to the present day and five works will be new to London.

ADMIRABLE TEXT Erich Fried's new translation of “Romeo and Juliet," staged in Heidelberg last month, has been hailed as the closest version to Shakespeare’s original by a German writer. The text is said to “breathe Shakespearian fire from every line” and to restore the bawdry to its proper level. Previous translators, trying to better the time-worn Schlegel version, rightly recognised Schlegel as the German Bowdler but erred in the other extreme.
