NEW FISHING BOATS
Registrations At Akaroa
Two recent additions to the Akaroa commercial fishing fleet brought the total number of fishing boats on Banks Peninsula, excluding Lyttelton, to 37, said the chief fisheries inspector of the Marine Department at Christchurch (Mr H. Jorgensen). Of the total, he said, about 30 would be working out of Akaroa. and the rest from Little Akaloa and some of the south-facing bays of the peninsula. Ten of the boats were registered as trawlers, but some of these were used both for line fishing and trawling. The new boats in the fleet at Akaroa are the Neptune, a 36ft trawler which Mr G. Jones bought at Napier, and the Winchester Star, a 33ft cruiser bought by Mr V. Davis at Timaru. Mr Davis also owns the trawler Anita, which is being worked for him by Mr H. Nee. Most of the line boats are now switched from groper to cray fishing, the crayfish season normally running from about now till Christmas. Early signs are for a good season, and the opening price of 4s a pound, as compared 'with about 2s 6d last year, is regarded as most satisfactory.
