RACING Goldtone Fit For First Start In Open Company

“The Press'* Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH.

A smart gallop over a mile by Goldtone, shorter sprints by Tarim, Tuskar Rock and Sacimo and fast schooling by Erldon were features of training at Awapuni yesterday when trials for the Masterton Racing Club’s meeting tomorrow were completd.

Goldtone, which beat Galacie, is a candidate for the J. A. Betts Memorial. It will be his first start in open company.

Except for Red View’s gallop on the plough, all the fast work was done on the inside trial, which provided firm footing. Goldtone shaded Galacie at the end of a mile in the good time of Imin 43sec, the last three furlongs in 39 2/ssec. Goldtone drew out slightly in the run home and worked well. He has run solid races under fair weights in hack class and may feature in the finish tomorrow. The apprentice, C. R. Lewis, will ride him again. Galacie will race in the Masterton Hack Hurdles. She has not been harmed by her heavy fall at Otaki. El Ganador, which may get a firm track to suit him in the Betts Memorial, ran keenly over seven furlongs in Imin 33 2/ssec, the last three in 39 2/ssec. He could have done better and looks in good shape after his recent race at Foxton. He usually races prominently at Masterton and will be well sunported this week. Tuskar Rock completed a fast five furlongs in Imin 2sec, running strongly over the last three in 37sec. Because of the going he did not

fulfil his Marton engagement. He is at his best and should be hard to beat in the Stewards’ Handicap. The smart two-year-old, Sacimo, was too good for Killery Bay at the end of half a mile in 49 3/ssec, the last three furlongs in 37sec. Sacimo is still green but is a good galloper as he showed in running second to Torere at Nelson at his most recent start. He should race well in the Juvenile Handicap tomorrow. Ran Well Clear Sir Loin was too good for Otehei over six furlongs in Imin 18sec, the last three in 40sec, with Sir Loin running well clear near the end. He has recovered well from his southern trip and should make his presence felt in the Masterton Hack Hurdles. Flounce worked brilliantly over six furlongs in Imin 16 4/ssec, the last three fast in 37 2/ssec. She is near her best and should be in favour for the Rosswood Hack Handicap.

Tarim was going nicely alongside Alaska at the finish of five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last three in 37l/ssec. Tarim is one of the most promising gallopers in commission. He broke a track record at Nelson in his first start beyond a mile and his prospects look bright for the Hinana Hack Handicap. Alaska is fresh and will resume in the Stewards’ Handicap this week. He may find the sprint distance too short at this stage. On the plough Red View ran five furlongs in Imin 4 3/ssec, the last three in 39 3/ssec. He was a non-starter at Marton but will contest the Stewards’ Handicap tomorrow. Another race may improve him further. Erldon schooled in his usual dashing style over four hurdles. He is a quick and competent fencer who is likely to take beating in the Masterton Hack Hurdles. Teneriffe schooled yesterday. He jumped the three permanent steeplechase fences slowly but safely. He was hesitant at first but that is usual with him in training. He fared very well in the steeplechase at Foxton and looks a bright prospect for the Bren Langford Memorial Steeplechase tomorrow. C. I. Goss will ride him. Working Gallop Baron’s Craig ran a working gallop over a mile which took him Imin 58sec. He has had no luck lately but is ready for a bold race in the steeplechase at Masterton. Hylander took Imin 3sec to run five furlongs, the last three in 38sec. He disappointed at Foxton although a wide draw forced him over extra ground early. He will have a chance to make amends in the Rosswood Hack Handicap tomorrow. Harvest Fair ran an easy half-mile in 55sec, the last

three furlongs in 40 2/ssec. He was slightly tender on pulling up. Harvest Fair is to resume at Masterton tomorrow. He is a galloper of class but hard to keep sound. Toronto completed six furlongs comfortably in Imin 19 2/ssec, the last three in 39 2/ssec. He will race in the hack mile at Masterton.
