Hurdler Joins Gold Medal Company

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, May 24.

The Otago hurdler, R. Johnson, has joined illustrious company. By winning the 440 yards hurdles at the Coliseum Relays at Los Angeles on May 15, he became the first non-Olympic champion to win the event in the seven years it has been contested.

The previous winners were Charles Moore (once), Glenn Davis (twice) and Rex Cawley (three times). All have won the Olympic 400 metres hurdles gold medal, Moore in 1952, Davis in 1956 and 1960 and Cawley last year.

Johnson’s time of 51.5 sec was the same as that recorded by the second man, Larry Godfrey (San Diego State University). The previous Saturday, Godfrey beat Johnson at the Fresno Relays in the same event. The former national champion's time on that occasion was 51.5 sec. As twice on successive Saturdays he has convincingly eclipsed the New

Zealand record of 52.55ec held by J. M. Holland, inquiries are being made into the possibility of a record being claimed.
