Prisoner In Hospital

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 23. An Auckland Prison inmate was taken under escort to Auckland Hospital this evening by ambulance. He is Frank Matich, aged 26, who was admitted to a medical ward where he is under guard. The acting prison superintendent, Mr'D. W. Byrne, said Matich had been seen by the prison doctor and was under observation in the hospital. Matich has a long criminal record, including three escapes from custody. At the time of his last escape in January. 1963, he was serving a five-year sentence for countinghouse breaking, shop breaking, car conversion and assault with intent to commit rape. He was later sentenced to another five years’ gaol for the escape.
