WALLABY DRIVE
Campaign Next Month 1 Another drive against wallabies will be held this winder in the Hunters Hills area j behind Waimate. j This is a follow-up to an extensive shooting campaign last year, when more than 4000 w’allabies were shot. The survivors of this big clean-uf will be under fire next month from shooters of the Wallaby Destruction Committee. aided by a party from fthe New Zealand Forest Ser[vice —about 20 men in all. A Menace I “Wallabies have been a menace to the farm output of jthis area for some years ipast." said Mr F. J. Ranger, conservator of the forest set[vice in Canterbury, yesterday. “They have done a lot jof damage by grazing down and fouling pastures.” A few years ago major poisoning campaigns were undertaken against the wallabies with great success, Mr Ranger said. There had been a big follow-up shoct i last winter, which accounted :for 4053 wallabies. “The drive this winter is jto clean up, as far as possible. the last remaining [pockets of wallabies—small groups which are holding out in scrub country over a wide [area,” he said.
Car Found.—A 1952 blue Holden car, number AP 5880. which was taken from Cranmer square on the evening of May 17, w’as found at Ward. Malborough, on Sunday. It bad apparently been abandoned after running out of petrol.
