BUSH TO BE IMPROVED

Higher Levies For Riccarton

Improvements are to be made to Riccarton bush. To enable this, local bodies which contribute to its upkeep are to pay higher levies.

Plans to engage additional labour were announced by the chairman of the Riccarton Bush Trustees (Mr J. Deans). Mr Deans said that weeds and exotic plants would be eradicated and native plants replanted in accordance with advice from a panel of experts. Irrigation would be installed. The Riccarton Bush Amendment Act, 1964, enabled the trustees to increase the levy on contributing bodies from £2500 to £5OOO a year. The levy for 1965-66 would be increased to £4OOO.

The proposals has been agreed to before the passing of the act by the contributing bodies, the Christchurch City Council, the Riccarton Borough Council, and the Waimairi, Paparua and Heathcote County Councils.
