AMALGAMATION OF COUNTIES

Halswell Agrees To Discussions Halswell County recently rejected a proposal that it amalgamate with Paparua but, at its meeting this week agreed to resume informal discussions. A letter from Paparua referred to the Local Govern ment Commission’s decision to review the position in Heathcote, Halswell, Mount Herbert and Paparua counties and Lyttelton borough, and said that Paparua had already had informal talk' with Heathcote. Further talks among the councils might be a desirable preliminary to a joint meeting. “Whether we favour amal gamation or not, we should meet Paparua," said Mr PWynn Williams. “We might finish up at arm’s length, but we will have to go before the commission and should I know what is in the other 'councils’ minds.”
