POPULATION OF N.Z.
Rise In Year To 2,641,176
The total population of New Zealand is now 2,641,176, according to the quarterly release of the Department of Statistics. The total is comprised of 1,327,048 males and 1,314,128 females. There was an increase of 50,389 in population in the year ended March 31. The natural increase for the quarter ended March 31 (the excess of births over deaths) was 10,099; lower than the figure of 10,640 in the quarter to March 31 last year. This is because births fell from 15,527 to 15,031, and deaths rose from 4887 to 4932.
Partly because of more New Zealanders leaving for overseas travel and working holidays, the net gain to the population by migration and movement of the armed forces was only 3589 for the quarter to March 31, compared with 5545 for the same quarter last year. The total population of the Cook Islands is now 19,214, of Niue Island, 5110, and of the Tokelau Islands, 1899. If these island territories are included. New Zealand’s total population rises to 2,667,399.
