LACKING IDEAS

LINWOOD 12: A. G. Mansfield a try ; W. F. McCormick a penalty goal and a dropped goal; J. A. Dawson a penalty goal. MERIVALE 0.

The players ran, passed and kicked to their hearts' content in this game at Rugby Park, but there was nothing very subtle about the great majority of the movements. It was one of Merivale’s better days, the forwards hunting the ball zealously and the backs passing and running with a will. D. Wynn and J. Maze were two lively forwards, J. Taylor and L. McCaughan were employed busily in setting up attacks and T. Marshall was the essence of soundness at full-back. But their efforts came to naught; Linwood found that an orthodox defence was sufficient to turn back Merivale’s movements.

Linwood, for its part, never settled down. The forwards were seldom able to dictate to the Merivale pack and their failure to protect their half-back, K. Fraser, meant the loss of much hard-earned possession. The Linwood backs were unable to operate effectively because of this instability among the forwards.

Only twice did the players' efforts reach great heights. One minute before half-time, McCormick, after teetering on tiptoe by the right-hand sideline for two or three seconds, regained his balance and dropkicked a startling 50 yards goal. And mid-way through the second half an 80 yard dash started and finished by Mansfield, with assistance in between from A. Holland and G. Cron, produced the only try of the game. Referee: Mr D. M. Hume. At Other Centres (N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH. May 16. Buller scored a deserved, 15-6 win over West Coast in a representative Rugby match on Saturday. Buller played as a team, and this factor was the key to its win. Buller's points came from tries by B. Stack and G. Wood. R. Dawe converted one and kicked two penalties and L. Halsall kicked a field goal. For West Coast. P. Veale and K. Beams scored tries. In an exhilarating match at Tolaga Bay, Poverty Bay beat East Coast, 8-6. For Poverty Bay, H. Nyenhuis and D. Wale scored tries and H. Henare converted one. M. Haua scored two tries for East Coast. Senior Draw The four leading teams will meet in the sixth round of the senior Rugby competition next week. The draw is: Christchurch v. University A (Lancaster Park), Old Boys v. New Brighton (Rugby Park), Albion v. Marist. University B v. Sydenham. Lincoln College v. Suburbs, Belfast v. Merivale, Linwood v. Shirley.
