CASHIN QUAY

Captains See Ship Berth

After arriving from Wellington early yesterday, the 7179-ton motor-vessel Port Montreal made an experimental berthing at Cashin quay and stayed alongside for two hours and a half before moving to an inner harbour berth. The harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion) piloted the Port Montreal to the quay in -fine weather with a light north-east breeze and almost no swell. The deputy-har-bourmaster (Captain J. Duncan) piloted her to the inner harbour shortly after 10 a.m. There appeared to be little movement while the vessel was alongside. On the quay were the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s engineer-in-chief (Mr J. A. Cashin) and three marine superintendents, Captains W. M. Clough (Port Line), R. S. Webster (New Zealand Shipping Company), and A. E. Smith (Shaw Savill and Albion Line). Captain Clough said such a berthing might provide new information. He had no further comment.
