Eeldon Makes Early Return After Sale

NELSON. Erldon. which was sold by his former Masterton trainer, T. L. Jennings, after racing at the Marlborough meeting, made a successful start in the colours of Messrs K. Pennington and E. A. Poole, of Opunake, in the First Hack Hurdles at Nelson yesterday. The Awapuni apprentice. B. L. Thompson, having his second ride over fences, took Erldon ' ront a«er the first ?Z ght ; The further they went the longer his lead became, and on the home turn he was out by at least 10 lengths from Bandarshah, which was clear of Star Quality. Although tiring in the run home, Erldon won bv nine lengths and Star Qualtiy beat Bandarshar for second bv five lengths. „ FALSE ODDS bo Smoke, the runner-up In the corresponding event on the first day, won the Trial Stakes at good odds—he paid £lO to Win—for Messrs W. A. Grant, of Washdyke, and G. A. Ledingham, of Georgetown. No Smoke improved from the thi rd line to share the pace with Excite at the furlong and ran it out best to beat the favourite by half a length. Excite, which had been handy but three wide on the home turn, beat So Lovely for second by a bit more than a length. Llansgaro. which had been at the back with So Lovely and Mastiff after two furlongs, ran on for fourth, but was half a length away. Red Bank, the pacemaker from the half-mile to the straight, was a nose back fifth, and Mastiff made ground for sixth, half a length behind him. Chantenay and Ishkoodah both struck trouble on the home turn when Princess Donnington dropped back quickly from the trailing position. FAVOURITE WINS Tohere outran his two-year-old rivals in the Kirbys Juvenile Handicap for which he was the win favourite. Torere disputed the pace with Glamis Lad to the last furlong, and ran it out best to win by a bit more than a length. Sacimo, which shared the second line with Bold Invader to the straight, beat Pee Wee for second by a similar margin. Pee Wee, a clear third on the turn, nosed Bold Invader out tn the last stride. Glamis Lad was a weakening fifth half a length back, but well clear of Gunga Din. FIRST AT MEETING Tarim, a three-year-old Targui gelding from Awapuni. gave
T. R. Howe his first training success at the meeting when he outstayed Keep in the Tahuna Hack Handicap, for which he was favourite.
Tarim and Keep ran together in the third line until near the five furlongs. Both improved past the tiring pacemaker, Mighty Nice, near the half-mile, and Keep was a clear leader from Tarim and First Mink at the three furlongs. Tarim ranged up to Keep going to the furlong and although! hanging in badly, managed to keep away from the top-weight and win by a length. Clipper, fourth down the back and third on the home turn, fought on for third a length behind Keep. First Mink, which could not quicken from the trailing position, was half a length back fourth, four lengths ahead of the weakening Cumberland.
