Star Of Kildare For Sprint At Otaki

•‘The Press*’ Special Sertnct

WELLINGTON.

The fact that neither Laramie, at Awapuni, nor Star of Kildare, at Wanganui, was given anything but quiet work on Thursday is an indication of their trainers’ confidence in the fitness of the pair for the T.A.B. double at Otaki today. The Ta Timi Kara Handicap today will be Laramie's fourth race in open company. He failed in the first two at Easter, but last week he easily beat a good field at Waverley.

Laramie carried the minimum weight of 7-7 at Waverley. The minimum at Otaki is 7-0. which means that even with the added weight his Waverley win earned him Laramie will carry only a pound more than at Waverley. If the track stays firm A. T. Jones has a good chance of winning the double on Reecho, which is second choice for the Ta Timi Kara and would not mind rain, and Star of Kildare, first choice for the Taipua Handicap as long as there is no rain.

Re-echo completed the T.A.B. double with Laramie at Waverley but he is betterknown as a middle-distance runner. He is usually last early in his races but he has a phenomenal finishing run. El Ganador will be a good fair-weather chance. He has been second in his last three starts.

Marise, third to Laramie and El Ganador at Waverley, is racing consistently.

Star of Kildare is usually rid. den by W. D. Skelton, but Skelton rides at Te Rapa today, and Jones takes the mount, as he did at Easter, when Star of Kildare raced at Tauherenikau.

At six, Star of Kildare does not have the early speed he once showed but he finishes solidly. If he does not begin quickly he might be forced back farther than usual, since he has drawn close to the inside. but he seems to run on as generously for Jones as for anyone else.

Young Margaret II battled into sixth place last week at Awapuni, after being beaten by Lei for an opening near the furlong. Before that she beat a strong field over seven furlongs at Feilding.

Fascinate, a middle-distance runner, is sprinting better than most of the acknowledged sprinters in the Taipua Handicap. She was third last week and she should go as well again.

The on-course double is on the two jumping events, the Winiata Memorial Steeplechase and the Ohau Hack Hurdles. Selections: 11.15 a.m.—Nepia Winiata Memorial Steeplechase:
