OPENING OF MANGERE

Invitation To Aeroflot

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, May 7.

The External Affairs Department has approved an invitation to the Russian airline, Aeroflot, to attend the official opening of Auckland’s international airport in January.

The invitation will be issued by the Auckland International Airport Pageant Committee which is organising the flying and static displays for the opening. It will also ask other international airlines not expected to run regular services to New Zealand.

The deputy-chairman of the committee, the Mayor of Auckland (Mr D. M. Robinson) said today it was hoped that the United States would consider sending a space capsule and the astronaut Colonel John Glenn to take part in the static display. It might also be possible to ask the Russians to send a Sputnik and the cosmonaut. Major Yuri Gagarin.
