‘Well Aware Of Shortages’
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 7. The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) said today that he was kept “very well advised” by his department and advisory councils of medical and staffing shortages in hospitals throughout New Zealand.
He said he was constantly receiving reports outlining the general hospital staffing position. He was replying to an article in the latest issue of the New Zealand Medical Association’s magazine, which claimed there were serious shortages of staff in several hospital fields. Under the front-page headline “No Shortage of Shortages,” the article listed shortages of psychiatrists, academic teachers, house sur-
geons, hospital staff, anaesthetists and neurologists. “I have several times publicly expressed my concern at the shortage of staff in psychiatric hospitals,” said Mr McKay. “In spite of the fact that medical staffing in psychiatric hospitals has doubled in the last five years, staffing is not up to World Health Organisation standards. “But in this we are in com-
mon with many other developed countries let alone the under-developed countries of the world.” He said the Health Department was advertising in Britain for psychiatric staff.
