N.Z. Stamps Make Show In American Journal
New Zealand stamps make a great show in one of the latest issues of “Linn’s Weekly Stamp News." Published in Ohio, it is described as the world’s largest publication for stamp collectors. It is virtually a New Zealand issue, with articles oh, and depictions of, New Zealand stamps on many pages. The outstanding display is a full-page set-out of pictorial stamps on a large map of New Zealand. For instance, the Id Canterbury centennial stamp, showing Christchurch Cathedral, locates Christchurch, and the current 5s stamp, depicting the Sutherland Falls, locates Milford Sound. About 40 other stamps placed on the map make for an impressive page. Headed “A Welcome to New Zealand,” the editor’s column says: “Chances are you are going to learn a lot about this South Pacific nation made up of two large main islands and several smaller ones . . . New Zealand has always been fair to stamp collectors. There is a moderate programme of new issues. Only needed values are printed. Artwork is better than average. Service has always been commendable. It is a country one can collect with pleasure.” A big reproduction of the 1964 Christmas stamp heads an article, “New Zealand Christmas Stamps Have Beauty and Colour.” An equally-large depiction of the new Anzac stamp heads an article about Anzac Day. its significance “down under,” and the history of Anzac commemoration stamps—there were id and Id Anzac stamps issued in 1936. Another big article deals with New Zealand’s famous health stamps. Of these, the editor, Mr C. P. Reuter, says: “New Zealand is one of the countries I collect casually. My initial attraction came
through the ‘Laughing Boy’ set of two for 1931. (“Red Boy” and “Blue Boy.’’) The design was unusual for the early 19305, and I bought. However, this pair then did not have the present Scott catalogue value of 40 dollars, either mint or uses, they have today!” “Outstanding” The New Zealand peace stamp issue Mr Rueter describes as one of the most notable sets issued by any country. “The best looking of the lot, and one which I believe belongs in the all-time category of excellent designs, is the 9d in black and bright blue—a view of the Waiho gorge in the Southern Alps as seen through a chapel window behind an altar. This artwork has been recognised in several responsible quarters as being outstanding.” Further articles deal with the Maoris and their place in stamp designs and the history of telecommunications in New Zealand—about which special commemorative stamps have been issued in recent years. Special tribute is paid by “Linn’s Weekly Stamp News” to the co-operation of the New Zealand Post Office in producing this issue.
