MELBOURNE, May 7.
Britain was on the verge of joining with the French to develop a new supfersonic fighter aircraft, the British industrialist, Lord Nelson of Stafford, said in Melbourne today.
Lord Nelson, chief executive of the English Electric Company, said the British aircraft industry had suffered a great blow to its morale when the Government decided to scrap production of the TSR2.
He said the future of the industry depended on the incentives created by the Government to give it a boost. “This new aircraft, which is under consideration, will have all the technical know-how which went into the development of the TSR2.” Lord Nelson said.
“It will be a light strike fighter with swept-back wings of the folding type. We are
all hoping that plans will be carried through.” Lord Nelson, who is also the joint deputy chairman of the British Aircraft Corporation, said he could not understand why the TSR2 was dropped for the American TFX.
He is in Australia visiting local subsidiaries of English Electric.
