CANBERRA, May 6. The Government today introduced legislation to streamline provisions for extended National Service in an emergency.
Under the legislation the Army will be able to retain 20-year-old conscripts in regu lar units for up to five years in an emergency.
The Government can de-cb.-e a defence emergency short of war by proclamation. Under existing legislation for selective National Service conscripts serve two years full-time in the Regular Army and three years parttime in the Army Reserve. But the Reserve service is liable for full-time and overseas duty in a defence emergency.
The Minister for Defence, Senator S. D. Paltridge, introduced the legislation in the Senate today. It also provides for national servicemen to serve for the duration of hostilities in the event of war.
Senator Paltridge said unacceptable administrative difficulty could arise in an emergency if a conscript had to be discharged from the Regular Army and served
with fresh call-up papers for full-time service in the Reserve.
Such transfers could disrupt the formations in which the conscripts were serving
