Ombudsman’s Powers
Sir, —It is interesting to note that the Ombudsman finds it necessary to ask for wider powers. One wonders if such powers were withheld from him from the beginning for reasons unkown to the general public. New Zealanders, on the whole, are quite apathetic in their approach to public affairs, probably because they have an inkling of what goes on. This apathy leads inevitably to the acceptance of the mediocre which is all to prevalent today and might even eventually poison the roots of democracy as we know it. Yes, give the Ombudsman the widest possible powers—and good luck luck to him.—Yours, etc., A. WALKER. May 3. 1965.
