Smoke Cloud Fails

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) YONKERS (New York). For the second time in succession Smoke Cloud of New Zealand found the race just a few yards too long as Irish Napoleon came through in the final strides on Thursday night to take the two-mile National Championship Pace at Yonkers Raceway, in the last race in the three-part international series.

Smoke Cloud, driven by W. Haughton, of the U.S., won the first race by taking the lead at the start and holding it. He tried that tactic again last week in the mile and a quarter Good Time Pace, but faded in the final yards as Bengazi Hanover won.

Last night, starting from post 1, Smoke Cloud again surged into the lead and held it at every pole for a mile and three-quarters. But Irish Napoleon, given a smart drive by the French Canadian, L. Fontaine, held steady in second place all the way, made his bid in the final yards and Smoke Cloud faltered under the pressure, losing second place to Cold Front, driven by V. Dancer in a photo.
