EXPORTS TO AUSTRALIA

No Shipping For Lamb None of the three freezing companies with works in the Christchurch district is yet exporting lamb to Australia, where meat prices have been forced up by shortages after the recent drought. All of these companies are investigating the Australian export possibilities. . The general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd. (Mr W. M. Cleland) said that exporting lamb by air to Australia was mainly confined to the North Island. We are not selling to Australia at the moment,” said Mr Cleland. The district manager of Thomas Borthwick and Sons (A’asia), Ltd. (Mr A. R. Watson) said his company had not sent any lamb to Australia but was investigating the possibilities. The assistant manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company (Mr N. P. Bergin) said his company was investigating th possibilities of sending lamb to Australia by air. “We would have no other way of getting it there,” he said.

Mr Bergin said that if the export of lamb to Australia was to build up to any quantities it would have to go by ship. In this case, Auckland, he said, with its better shipping services to Australia would be in a much better position than Christchurch freezing works.

“They would have chances of ships like the Monterey, for which Auckland is a second port of call," said Mr Bergin. The sending of lamb to Australia from New Zealand was possibly only a temporary measure.

“We are investigating the possibilities, the same as the other people,” he said.

A.A. Patrols. Patrol officers of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) travelled 11,482 miles in March, assisted 116 cars, shipped 41, erected 72 signs, and enrolled 16 members. Technical service officers inspected 260 vehicles, assisted 12 cars, and enrolled 22 members.
