Man Seriously Burned

A war pensioner was critically burned on the head, chest and feet in a fire in a rooming house yesterday morning.

The pensioner, Daniel J. McLeod, aged 58, single, of 172 Chester street, is in the Burwod Hospital. His condition last evening was reported to be very critical.

The alarm was given at 7.12 a.m., and two fire engines were at the house within two minutes. The firemen put the fire out in less than a minute, using a high-pressure hose reel. Firemen said that the blaze was a “flash fire” caused by kerosene igniting. A friend of Mr McLeod, Mr D. Miller, who lives in the same house, said Mr McLeod used a kerosene heater and boiled water on top of it for washing and making tea. Kerosene apparently had been spilled over the spare bed and the floor.
