Debutantes Presented At Rangi-ruru Ball
Twenty - six debutantes were presented to Mrs D. B. Smith, president of the Rangiruru Old Girls’ Association, at the association’s annual ball in the Winter Garden last evening.
The debutantes were presented by their fathers or escorts and one of the debutantes was presented by her grandfather. Gold and’ white posies, a gift from the association, were presented to the debutantes by Mrs Smith. Miss E. Cornyns Thomas trained the debutantes. The debutantes were: Misses Janet Bates, Susan Bretherton, Philippa Burtt, Patricia'Charman, Janet Clibbom, Margaret Craw, Elizabeth Crawford, Ruth Forrester, Jain Goss,. Gillian Graham, Antoinette Harvey, Suzanne Harvey, Peta Jones, Christine Kelly, Roberta Kingsbury, Patricia Manning, Beth Morris, Bronwyn Murie, Margaret Murie, Annette Pilbrow, Diana Rudkin, Julie Sanderson, Jennifer Stone, Georgina Syme, Jennier Tucker, and Jennifer Witbrock.
Mrs Smith wore a gown of peacock blue satin with a lightly draped bodice featuring a beaded Florentine neckline. The slim fitting skirt had a floating overskirt of the same material.
Miss Coleman, actingprincipal of the school, wore a lime green faille gown with the skirt falling in soft folds from the draped bodice. The guests were greeted by Mrs Smith and members of the committee. More than 700 guests attended the ball. Specially invited guests included: the chairman of the
Board of Governors, the Very Rev. M. W. Wilson and Mrs Wilson; the acting-principal, Miss L. Coleman; the deputyprincipal, Miss N. Ridley; the bursar, Mr J. L. Kerr and Mrs Kerr; representatives of the Parent Teacher Association, Mr D. E. Dalzell and Mrs Dalzell; chairman of the Fund Raising Appeal, Dr. E. Blakely and Mrs Blakely: the chairman of the Old Girls* Division of the Appeal, Mrs J. S. Royds and Mr Royds: Miss E. Cornyns Thomas; and representatives of kindred associations, Christchurch Girls’ High School, St. Mary’s Convent, St. Margaret’s College, Christchurch West High School, Christ’s College and St. Andrew’s College. Gold and white, the school colours, featured in the large mass floral decorations of
chrysanthemums, hydrangas, toi toi, and greenery. A large gold and white school crest hung from the ceiling in front of the orchestra and smaller crests were hung on the alcove wails in the ballroom.
Gold oandles in troughs of gold and white flowers and ivy leaves made centre pieces for the supper tables. The committee who organised the bail were: president, Mrs D. B. Smith; committee, Mesdames C. W. Ballantyne, N. R. Belcher, T. R. Caldwell, J. S. Callaway, D. B. Dallas, K. W. Frampton, D. C. Parker, Misses Prue Allan, Joan Hanna, Lyndsay McAlister, Kathleen McKerrow, Dorothy McMillan and Alison Oakley; secretary, Miss Betty Webb; treasurer, Mrs D. E. Dalzell.
