12 Teams To Play The popular fortnightly Sunday winter tennis competition will be held this year for the third time by the Canterbury association. Twelve teams have entered, compared with 15 last year, when play was in two sections, and 10 in 1963. The competition will begin on May 9 and is scheduled to end on September 12. Again teams of two men and two women will play a men’s doubles, a women’s doubles, each the best of three sets, and four mixed doubles, the best of 17 games. Of last year’s teams. Opawa 11, Spreydon I and 11, Beckenham. Barrington, and Sumner have dropped out. but there are three newcomers, Riccarton Domain, Edgeware, and St. Mary’s. Those remaining from last year are Shirley, North Linwood, Opawa. four Avonside teams, Redcliffs, and Fendalton. Opawa has won the competition both years. It beat Fendalton in the inter-section play-off last year, by 60 games to 57. N.Z. Tie In July (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 29. New Zealand will meet the British Caribbean in its first round Davis Cup match on July 10, 11 and 12, the team manager, Mr J. W. Gunn, said in Auckland today. There had been suggestions that the tie would be played in June, before Wimbledon, but New Zealand objected to this. The date was referred to Australia, as the country holding the trophy, to make a final decision, but Mr Gunn said the British Caribbean had Itself agreed to the postWimbledon date. Surprise For Britain (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 29. Israel, which has won only one Davis Cup tennis tie, surprised Britain by finishing level, at 1-1, after yesterday’s opening singles in their first round European zone match. Britain, which won the European zone two seasons ago, went ahead when R. Taylor beat Oded Shay, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.
But Eleazar Davidma put Israel on terms with a shock win over Britain’s No. 1, M. J. Sangster, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4, after saving three match points in the third set. Ralston’s Reply (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BAKERSFIELD, April 29. The. American tennis player, R. D. Ralston, yesterday issued an ultimatum to the United States Davis Cup team captain, Mr G. Mac Call. He said that if he was kept out of the team to play Canada in the opening cup game he would make no attempt later to gain a team berth, United Press International reported. Ralston, the No. 1 ranked player in the country, was suspended from the team after he walked out of a tournament last week.
