LENDING LIBRARY
Another Dies In Britain (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 29. Competition from public libraries and the attractions of television have killed a second circulating library in Britain—Boots’. The first was Smith’s, which closed its branches throughout the country in 1961 after more than 100 years in business. Boots’ has announced that by February of next year its remaining 121 libraries it once had 450—would be closed. Thirty years ago they had more than half a million subscribers. Now they have fewer than 140,000. “The point has been reached where it is no longer possible to provide the kind of library service Boots’ subscribers are entitled to expect," the company said. A spokesman said the younger generation was not being attracted. “It would be wrong to conclude that people are not reading as much. But they appear to prefer either to buy a paperback or borrow from a public library.”
