LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Court Remands
Sir.—The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) should not be too sure that this case was “exceptional.” I was at the Magistrate's Court on several occasions when the young man charged with receiving a stolen guitar was remanded in custody. It was following another case, also resulting in final dismissal, where a man was accused of a motoring offence. This man was remanded on bail, but week after week for three months he had to leave his work and sit for hours in this draughty court just to hear the mumbled formula repeated. Another accused was repeatedly remanded while the police vainly tried to locate their witness, a deserter from the forces. The remand was contested by defence counsel but the police assured the court that they
would eventually “get their
man” (laughter). The following week the Magistrate lost patience and a quite trivial charge was dismissed.—Yours, VARIAN J. WILSON. April 29, 1965.
