Horticultural Society’s Chrysanthemum Show

An arrangement of dried materials in buffs, yellow, and browns, depicting the landing at Gallipoli was an entry of topical interest in the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s chrysanthemum show which opened yesterday in the Horticultural Hall. Displayed in the decorative effect section by Mrs W. K. Wright, it was awarded first prize. In spite of the damage caused in most city gardens by Monday’s storm, entries totalled 801, 11 more than last year.

Mr G. Jones, the decorative section judge, said although the competition had been limited by the weather the winners were quite up to standard in colour and form.

Mr W. S. Busch, large and medium chrysanthemum judge, said the new blooms were especially good, notably the blue ribbon winner, L. Clark’s Gigantic. This exhibit was a large incurving bloom in pink-buff and bronze. Other new blooms included Keith Luxford, a deep shaded pink. Statley, a lavender pink, and Mark Wolman, in primrose. The judge, Mr L. C. Hendal, said the apples were of exceptional colour and class. Awards were made as follows: Award of merit.—J. Hallam's display of chrysanthemums and R. A. Bell-Booth and Company’s display.
