Record Sales Conclude
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) SYDNEY. The final day of the Sydney yearling sales finished on a high note on Tuesday when five Australian and New Zealand thoroughbred trading records were shattered. Yesterday 114 lots were sold for 114,420 Australian guineas, an average of 1003.6 guineas. This was the lowest average of the four days of this year’s sale. Tuesday’s figures were maintained by the fact that of the 192 yearlings catalogued, 78 were either passed in or withdrawn from sale. Nevertheless, the 1965 sales go down as the highest ever staged in the Southern Hemisphere. A total of 574 yearlings were sold for 700.375 guineas—an average price of 1220.1 guineas. The previous best aggregate was 666,035 guineas at an average of 1065.6 guineas. Top price on the final day was 10,500 guineas paid for a colt by Star Kingdom from Betrothal. He was bought by the Sydney trainer C. Rolls. Star Kingdom finished as top sire of the sales with 13 of his progeny selling for 71,400 guineas at an average of 5492.3 guineas. Runner-up for stallion honours was Wiles, with 16 of his progeny selling for an aggregate of 82,700 guineas at an average of 5168 guineas.
