OLD FOR THE JOB

Driver Of 83 (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, April 28. Mr H. N. Harris, of Mangonui, told the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr G. Allingham) at Kaitaia yesterday that his father, Mr C. W. Harris, who had held the licence before him and had been driving for him, felt he was getting a bit old for the job. His father is 83. Mr Harris sought the transfer of-a taxi licence to a purchaser, Mr W. A. O’Shea. The transfer was granted. Mr Harris was 12 years old in 1894 when he began to drive horse vehicles for his father, Mr Charles Harris, who kept a livery stable in Mangonui. His father died in 1906 and Mr Harris ran the livery stable and drove coaches until 1920 when he bought a taxi. He has driven motors for hire for 45 years. He feels he is getting on a bit now and will be content to drive down to the store in Mangonui and 30 miles into Kaitaia once a week.
