Commonwealth Order Of Merit
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 28. Mr Wilson said today the Government would consider any suggestion by a Commonwealth head of government for a new Order of Merit for outstanding service to the Commonwealth. Mr John Tilney, a Conservative, had urged the introduction of an Order of Merit for the Commonwealth, to be given on the advice of Presidents and Governors-
General to any of their nationals.
Mr Wilson replied that citizens of Commonwealth countries other than Britain were eligible for the existing Order of Merit, except those where the Queen was not head of State. These had their own system of honours. “I think there would be difficulties in proposing a Commonwealth system,” he added.
Asked if he would oppose such an order if proposed by another Commonwealth country, he said the existing order was awarded on the Queen’s initiative.
If the proposal was for a new order, the Government would of course be prepared to consider any suggestion made by any Commonwealth head of government. A large number of Commonwealth citizens, however, were included in the Queen’s birthday honours list every year, he added.
