Speed Limits
Sir, —One could not agree more with your correspondent, “Critical.” One is all on the side of the traffic police in bringing to book reckless drivers; but surely to goodness, a car or motor-bicycle can be identified for subsequent action without having to chase it through the streets at 70 or 80 miles an hour. One cannot avoid suspicion, maybe quite unworthy, that sometimes these spectacular pursuits are indulged in with a view to reassuring the public "The ‘Mounties’ always get their man” sort of thing. Perhaps that is justifiable; but equally inescapable is the conviction that two vehicles tearing along the roads and streets at such speeds are far worse than one.—Yours, etc., I LAM. April 28, 1965.
