FASTER CARGO HANDLING
Roll On And Off Ships The adoption of the roll-on ■ roll-off type of ship possibly i should be extended to other ■coastal ships in addition to 'the Aramoana and the interi island steamers, said the [president of the Canterbury [Manufacturers’ Association I (Mr R. G. Pearce). IMr Pearce suggested that I perhaps the Union Steam [Ship Company did not want | to commit itself further till it [had had time to observe the i operation of the planned new i inter-island system. [ Cargo handling was speeded up by the roll-on roll-off type of ship where the volume of traffic was satisfactory, he said. “1 think it is something that will inevitably come,” said Mr Pearce. “Before long the roll-on roll-off will be handling that what is being handled by the winch, slings and derrick system.”
Mr Pearce was commenting on a letter from the governing director of Wilfrid Owen. Ltd. (Mr W. B. Owen-, who said he had read that this system of cargo transport was to be extended to all Australian ports.
Linked with such a project, he said, there would arise the situation where carrying trucks domiciled in Christchurch could find themselves in Auckland, Wellington or elsewhere.
The Aramoana must have already experienced this and found the solution.
