Coffee Addiction In Bach Cantata
The final lunch-time concert of the first term, organised by the School of Music at the University of Canterbury, will be given this Thursday by students of the university. The Undergraduates' Choir with a small orchestra will present Bach's joyous “Coffee Cantata.” The soloists will be Heather Taylor, soprano, Anson Austin, tenor, and Winston Sharp, baritone.
Close to Gilbert and Sullivan in spirit, the “Coffee Cantata” tells the story of a young maid who is addicted
to the now popular beverage. Her father, a man of many worries, prescribes certain punishments including forbiddance to marry. This produces the required capitulation as well as a neat turning of the tables in the end.
The music, light-hearted in spirit is organised into the customary Chorus-aria-recitative formula which in itself lends humour to the situation. This concert which will conclude the series devoted to the music of Bach will be presented in the university hall.
