DANGEROUS SURFACE

Desert Road At Waiouru f.V.Z Press Association) WANGANUI, April 27. Motorists are warned of a stretch of the Desert road from two to six miles north of Waiouru. This section has produced nine accidents —one involving a bus—since Christmas. All the accidents have involved single vehicles travelling south. The police at Waiouru say that when it is wet the stretch of road, which includes a downhill section, can be treacherous if brakes are applied. The Ministry of Works sealed the section before Christmas. but the hot weather and high density of traffic caused the tar to bleed. The Ministry has erected signs at both ends of the stretch and has begun experiments burning off a small portion of the road. The latest accident was on Saturday when a big car rolled over a rise. A truck approaching the scene was waved down, but when its driver applied the brakes the truck skidded violently.
