BANKRUPT OWES £l480

Failure Of Film Venture

A 35-year-old Jugoslav who came to New Zealand “to make my fortune” found himself bankrupt instead within two years. He is John Perkovic, a painter, who was adjudged bankrupt on his own petition on April 13. Perkovic at a meeting of his creditors yesterday, with the Official Assignee (Mr P. D. Clancy) in the chair, showed debts of about £l4BO owed to about 16 creditors. Perkovic said he spent four years in the Italian film industry before coming to New Zealand with his equipment about June, 1963, hoping to make his fortune. He formed the Croatia Films Company with a capital of £l5OO in cash and a further £lOOO of equipment. “I intended to make fulllength documentary films and shorts and commercials for television,” he said “However the language barrier (Perkovic had an interpreter with him at the meeting) and perhaps my own artistic, mercurical temperament proved too much, and I find myself in my present position. 1 have nothing left except clothes, and my wife and two children are living with me in one room at Addington camp.” No offer was made by the bankrupt. Mr Clancy closed the meeting.
