NATURAL GAS IN VICTORIA

Possibilities Seem Good (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 27. The Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria is optimistic on the possibility of natural gas being used in Victoria in the near future. Next week technical officers will begin interviewing executives of about 150 major energy users in the Victorian industrial field.

The results of the survey, plus a report by Dr. Charles Hetherington, of Canada, will determine the patterns of energy consumption in Victoria and the potential for natural gas. The chairman of the Gas and Fuel Corporation (Mr A. E Chadwick) yesterday tentatively put forward a target date of between three to five years for the introduction of natural gas in the State depending mainly on future exploration. This estimate halves the previous seven-year estimate made last year before the offshore discovery at the EssoGippsland Shelf No. 1. The corporation is most impressed with the off-shore Victorian prospect.

New Oil Lead Li Gippsland (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 27. Woodside (Lakes Entrance) Oil Company, N.L., said today that it had uncovered a new lead in its search for oil and gas in Gippsland. The company announced that recent survey work in the Woodside-Yarram area had revealed structural conditions justifying an immediate change in its drilling programme. The next well will be drilled near the township of Woodside. Directors say the structures are being studied in view of their relation to known offshore structures. (A structure is an underground geological formation, capable of forming an oil or gas reservoir.) The Lake Reeve No. 1 well, five miles north-east of Seaspray, has reached a depth of 6635 ft and will be plugged and abandoned. No hydro carbons have been discovered. F. Fertiliser Lift Capital (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. April 27. Shareholders of New Zealand Farmers’ Fertiliser Company have approved lifting nominal capital from £2m to £3m, according to the New Zealand Stock Exchange Association. Directors can now go ahead with plans for a one-for-seven cash issue of 20s shares at 15s premium. Shares became ex rights today. The issue will lift ordinary paid capital by £233,321 to £1.866.568 and reserves by £174,990 to £2.003,265.
