LEADERS WIN

First Round Of Squash As predicted. University, Christchurch A, and Christchurch B won their opening matches in the A grade squash rackets competition last evening. The biggest upset was the defeat of an out-of-form P. U. Mackenzie by L. G. Milne. Mackenzie was ranked number two and Milne fifth. With little play this season, and with Milne moving him around the court well with drops and lobs, Mackenzie soon ran out of steam. The top Canterbury player, D. R. Preston, overcame some spirited early opposition from D. J. Triggs. Preston was caught with a few good drop shots early on, but when he reverted to a steady drive and drop game, Triggs found the going very hard. J. H. N. Pine played his usual round-the-walls game and kept M. Garrett well out of the picture. His was the easiest win of the top players. Most interesting of the teams matches was that between Officers and Christchurch B. G. Beadel put the Officers in front with an unexpected win over P. C. Angland.

M. R. Blank (Officers) used all his guile to subdue the young M. D. Grant, by 3 games to 1, but the game that Grant won proved valuable as his team ran out winners by one game. Collegiate 1. University 3. J. H. N. Pine beat M. Garrett, 9-0 9-5, 9-4; L. Williams lost to N. A. Justice. 3-9 9-3, 10-9. 6- 0-9; P. R. Colville lost to I. Watson, 10-9, 6-9, 0-9, 7-9; D. A. Garrett lost to N. W.
