...If Life Exists
(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 27. A group of American scientists has advocated that the United States should make a concerted effort to find out whether there is life on Mars.
This should be done by landing a package of lifeseeking instruments on the planet either in 1971 or 1973 when Mars will be extremely close to earth, the space science board of the National Academy of Science recommended to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The board said it was not certain whether life as known
on earth was a rare and accidental phenomenon or whether it was a natural consequence under favourable conditions. “What is at stake in this uncertainty is nothing less than knowledge of our place in nature.
“It is the major reason why the opportunity to explore a neighbouring planet for life is so immensely important,” the board said.
