TRADING IN PACIFIC
“Embargo” By France France had placed what 'almost amounted to an eta- ; bargo on those wanting to I trade with French territories |in the Pacific, said Mr W. H. i Price, at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury ManuI facturers’ Association. Mr Price said he had gathered this information from a jMr Davies. j It was very difficult to trade with French territories, he 'said. | Mr J. K. Dobson said the French had import controls. “We should be able to knock this over easily.” he said.: “We should know all about these.” Mr Price and Mr Dobson were commenting on a 16-day Pacific trade mission being planned by the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation to leave Auckland tentatively on August 14. The mission would provisionally visit Suva, Pago Pago, Apia, Lautoka and return to Auckland via Nandi. Private trips were also available to! the French possessions of i Noumea or Tahiti. There was j also an optional side-trip to I Tonga. Mr E. P. Chapman said the membership was limited to 20 selling members and six servicing members. A committee had been set up by the federation to plan preparatory work. The itinerary would be decided at the committee's next meeting on Thursday. Invitations would be sent out to manufacturers to participate and the question of Government assistance would be clarified.
The trade mission, he said, was expected to return to Auckland on September 1.
