INDUSTRIAL SURVEY
Labour Dept. Inquiry The Labour Department’s half-yearly survey of employment had brought a good response by Canterbury employers. said the district superintendent of the department (Mr C. D. Macan) yesterday. Mr Macan said that fewer than 8 per cent of employers had not returned forms. The returns sent to employers totalled 5500. Mr Macan said that there had been quite a considerable increase in the number of employers surveyed. Five years ago, the total of returns sent out was 4600, 900 fewer than this year, and the number of full-time employees reported in the returns at that date was 52,450. The last figure available was for October, 1964. and this gave 56,600 employees a rise of about 13j per cent over the five-year period. The information gained from the half-yearly employment surveys reveals that changes have occurred in key industries, the volume of spending money put into circulation through wages and salaries, and the industries suffering the greatest employment shortages.
