AIRFIELD IN CHATHAMS

Enthusiasm For

Project

(N.Z... Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 25

A Chathams County Council party which met Government officials in Wellington had gained the impression that the Government would meet a high proportion of the £345,000 cost of an airfield for the islands if the islanders backed a proposed integrated air-sea transport service to the mainland. This is stated in a public notice issued by the Chathams Islands resident commissioner, Mr D. S. Reid, a copy of which was released in Wellington at the week-end.

The proposals for the service, which would provide 50 return air flights and seven return sea trips a year, had been well received by organisations and the public in the Chathams, said Mr Reid.
