Order For Navy Deferred
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, April 23. The 11 helicopters for the Armed Forces will not complete New Zealand’s helicopter purchases. As expected the Cabinet has deferred placing an order for three helicopters for antisubmarine duties with frigates of the Royal New Zealand Navy. In anticipation of this the Naval request was made separately. Three, or possibly four.
helicopters of the Westland Wasp type, specially designed for operation from the flightdecks of modified Whitbyclass frigates, are wanted, it will be at least 18 months, however, before the new frigate Waikato and a possible “lease-lend” vessel from the Royal Navy will be ready to take the helicopters aboard. The cost of the Wasps is likely to be between £250,000 and £300,000.
