“Childish Display” At P.T.A. Meeting
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, April 22.
A move to expel private school delegates from the Auckland Parent-Teachei’ Associations’ Federation was defeated tonight.
The vote on the motion—that private school representation be terminated—ended a long and often rowdy discussion at the annual meeting of the federation.
Speakers were interrupted by laughter, cat calls and continual points of order.
Discussion on “State schools versus private schools” began after the president (Mr R. F. Riddell) read his annual report.
Speakers were either for or against State aid to. private schools.
The report was finally received—4s votes for, 38 against. After this the motion to terminate private school representation was tabled. Discussion followed the same pattern. Several representatives of State schools raised their voices against the move.
One speaker was roundly cheered after saying: “I have never known such a childish display as I have heard tonight. Nothing constructive has been said.”
The motion was finally put to the meeting and Was lost, decisively, on the voices.
Building Permits. The Halswell County Council issued 18 building permits valued at £19,097 during the last month. These included four dwellings, a pigeon house, a swimming pool, and a feeding shed.
