Knight Of The Garter

(N Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)

LONDON, April 23

The Queen tonight appointed Viscount Brookeborough—for 20 years Prime Minister of Northern Ireland—and Lord Bridges, former head of the Civil Service, as Knights of the Garter.

Tonight’s announcement fills the two vacancies in the Order caused by the death of Sir Winston Churchill and Viscount Alexander of Hillsborough. Appointment to the Order of the Garter is the personal gift of the Queen, who is Sovereign of the Order. Tonight’s appointments still leave two vacancies in the order, which is limited to 26, apart from members of the Royal Family and honorary foreign members. Lord Bridges, one of the 12 pall-bearers at Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral, was known as the “man with a million secrets.”

Throughout World War II he was Secretary to the Cabinet and was also Permanent Secretary to the Treasury and head of the Civil Service.

Lord Brookeborough was Prime Minister of Northern Ireland from April, 1943, to March, 1963.
