“The Press” In 1865
APRIL 24 THE HOKITIKA <jlß _At best I am but a poor Maori scholar, but my deficiencies in this respect are much aggravated by the editors of newspapers in Christchurch, and I consider it very bard that they can’t make up their minds yet how properly to spell the name of the present city of our goldfields district Here we are, living within a short distance from the very spot, and yet I am puzzled to know, when speaking of that locality, whether I am to say Hotikiki, HoHkita. (Hiklti. or Otikita. Has this name anything to do with Canterbury politics? for it is a curious
fact that that portion of the Canterbury press, supporters of our present Government. use the H in the word, but the Opposition do not! I am informed that the Lyttelton Times has terribly lost ground of late owing to its uphappy connexion with a very doubtful cause;—perhaps the Editor has been obliged to economise by ordering the chap to “drop that board and ‘ook it” Please, Sir, call a meeting of your order and settle the question, for the benefit and instruction of the general public, and of, Sir, yours respectfully, NO COCKNEY. [Our correspondent has got the word wrong throughout. We believe the correct spelling is Hokitika.— ED. PRESS]
