OCEAN RACE

Wellington To Akaroa

A race for ocean-going yachts will be held between Wellington and Akaroa on January 8 next year. The race is being arranged by the Akaroa Sailing Club in conjunction with the Banks Peninsula and Port Nicholson (Wellington) clubs, and has an anonymous sponsor. The first prize is valued at £4OO. It is envisaged that the race will be held every three years, and the organisers hope boats from all over New Zealand will compete.

It will be the first North-to-South Island race since about 1950 when, in a Wellington to Lyttelton race, several lives were lost. However, the organisers are running no risks this time, and safety precautions as used in all the world’s major ocean races will be enforced.
