Weekly Matches Benefit Squash Standard

THE decision to play the A grade squash rackets competition matches each week—following last season’s pattern—is a wise one. Last year there were many who said that it was too often and that teams would be forced to default through shortage of players. But except in the rather special case of Wigram, this was not so. Six teams were fielded on most occasions and except for isolated matches, some extremely even com-

petition was seen. The general standard of squash in Christchurch has risen considerably in the last few seasons and last year’s weekly competition, by providing regular match play, for the 24 top players, set the seal on this improvement. This year with the loss of several A grade players, weekly matches will give former B grade competitors the chance to consolidate their strokes under match conditions. A grade matches begin next Tuesday, C grade on

Monday, and B grade on May 3. At a combined meeting of South Island clubs recently these tournament dates were settled:— May 15, 16: North Otago championships. May 29, 30: Nelson. June 19, 20: Southland. July 3,4: Canterbury. July 10, 11: Otago. July 17, 18: South Canterbury. July 31, August 1: South Island at ChristchurchAugust 14, 15: Cousins Shield at Dunedin. August 28, 29: Ashburton (subject to building of courts).
