COAL-FIRED GENERATOR
Output Would Go To NJ.
(From Our Oun Reporter) WESTPORT, April 16.
Any move to build another hydro-electric station would not prejudice the construction and operation of a large coal-fired or other type of station in the Buller, said the Minister of Electricity (Mr Shand) in a letter to the Buller Power Board on Wednesday.
the cost of a large coalfired station to use Buller coal was being investigated but there was no commitment to build it, Mr Shand said.
The output from such a station would be required in the North Island and consequently the investigations included the relative economics of transporting either the electricity or the coal. A decision on the major issues would not depend on the local requirements for electricity. Mr Shand said the development of relatively small hydro-electric stations by supply authorities was desirable where they could be justified economically, irrespective of their proximity to national stations.
The board has been investigating the use of Buller streams as sources of hydro supplies and is considering reports from its adviser, a Dunedin firm.
