ACROSS THE WALL
W. Berliners Visit
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)
EAST BERLIN, April 12.
The first West Berliners, laden with presents, arrived in East Berlin by the overhead railway a few minutes after 7 a.m. today to visit East Berlin relatives at the start of the Easter day passes scheme. Their arrival set at rest the anxiety that the East Germans might cancel the passes scheme in reprisal for what they considered an illegal meeting in West Berlin last Wednesday of the West German Bundestag (Lower House). There were only a few Germans waiting at East Berlin’s Friedrichstrasse railway station and there were none of the emotional scenes of family reunion which marked the earlier passes schemes.
This is the fourth scheme since the Communist Berlin wall was built in August, 1961, and the journey across the wall has very nearly become a routine for West Berliners.
